Project Development

1. Our Team Chemical Device

What is our device?

Our device is a breathalyzer that when detects that the driver is going to drunk drive, would activate a water flowing system which will allow water to flow onto the driver. This intends to wake the driver up. There is also an alarm system which is loud and intends to warn the driver not to drive as he is drunk.

Why? In recent years, there is an increase of drink driving which led to accidents and deaths.

3. Design and Build Process

Respective Contributions

Design of Tank, Door Cover, L-bend and Attachments are by Andrew Sim, myself.

Facilitating of 3D-Printing is done by myself, Andrew and Jun Heng.

Facilitating Laser Cutting is done by Jun Heng.

Arduino Programming and circuit interconnection are done by Pi Ti.

Documentation and assembly of parts are done by Cyane.

Individual Contributions

I designed the 3D Printed objects, namely the Tank, Door Cover, L-bend and Attachments.

Sketches for L-Bend

I think some improvements I can make to concentrate the water flow to the door and make an actual hinge for the attachments.

4. Problems and Solutions

One of problems faced was the water leakage when tank was filled with water. Even when the door cover was closed, water still leaked from the tank. Some solutions were suggested by Dr. Noel, one was to replace the fluid with a more viscous fluid or silica gels, another was spread a layer of epoxy on the inner walls of the tank to make the 3D-Printed object waterproof.

The first print of the tank was paper thin. We adjusted the settings in the Curaslicer and reprinted the tank.
